15 Sep Floating Apple Store
The world tech giant Apple entered Singapore 39 years ago, in 1981, where the first office was located in Ang Mo Kio. Today, on the 10th of September 2020, the world’s first flagship Apple Store built on water officially opened in Marina Bay Sands.
The dome structure designed by architects Foster + Partners is inspired by the Pantheon in Rome, an oculus located at the apex of the dome provides a flooding ray of light that brightens the whole space, giving an ephemeral effect. The interior of the glass is lined with custom baffles, uniquely shaped to counter sun angles and provide a nighttime lighting effect.
With trees lining the interior of the dome, the green garden city of Singapore flows into the store, providing additional shading and soft shadows through the foliage. This fusion of urban structure and nature elevates the entire customer experience.
During the daytime, the new Marina Bay Sands store appears to look like a spacecraft or perhaps a futuristic theater. At nighttime, when Singapore’s iconic skyline is lit in all its glory in the background, the store comes alive where it is clearly designed as an evening fixture best viewed in the dark.
Visitors entering the store encounter a dramatic reveal into the massive volume of the dome, where the 148-person team at Apple Marina Bay Sands, who collectively speak over 23 languages, will create an unforgettable experience for customers.
“Apple Marina Bay Sands will be at the heart of creativity, a place we’ve made for you to capture your ideas and passions,” Apple said.
“It will be a space for you to explore, connect and create something new.”
What do you think this dome smells like?
